Our Power, Our Planet

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970, and it turns 55 on 22 April 2025. This anniversary will be celebrated by over one billion people around the world. The Earth Day movement remains committed to bringing everyone together in a shared commitment for environmental stewardship.

To mark this occasion, UNEP's Faith for Earth Coalition is lending its support to Earth Day's theme of "Our Power, Our Planet," highlighting the moral and spiritual imperative for individuals, faith communities, and institutions to safeguard our common home.

The Coalition acknowledges that faith traditions across the world emphasise values such as justice, compassion, and responsibility, which can guide us in addressing the urgent climate crisis. Our response to the growing impacts of climate change must be rooted in ethical leadership, interfaith solidarity, and a commitment to sustainable solutions.

The Coalition posits that as we transition to renewable energy, the protection of vulnerable communities and the need for responsible consumption are not just policy choices—they are moral imperatives.

The Path Forward: A Faith-Driven Approach

Faith for Earth Coalition proposes three initiatives for Earth Day that faith communities can consider, to make a real difference:

🌍 Moral and Ethical Responsibility: Climate change disproportionately impacts those least responsible for it. Faith-based action must prioritise environmental justice, ensuring no community is left behind in the transition to sustainability.

⚡ Faith and Renewable Energy: Places of worship, religious institutions, and faith networks can lead by example—embracing solar and wind energy, advocating for ethical investment, and inspiring grassroots action for energy justice.

🤝 The Power of Faith and Collaboration: Interfaith dialogue and partnerships can drive systemic change, bridging divides and mobilising communities to advocate for bold climate policies and sustainable development.

Earth Day 2025 is an opportunity to reaffirm our shared responsibility as caretakers of the Earth, aligning faith with action for a just, resilient, and thriving future. - Faith for Earth Coalition
